Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night might have been the first gender-bending comedy. Twins Viola and Sebastian are separated by a shipwreck. Viola disguises herself as a young man, calls herself Cesario, makes her way to the nearest town, finds a job with the local duke, and falls in love—with him. Meanwhile, Duke Orsino is in love with Olivia. Olivia doesn’t love Orsino but tumble’s head-over-heels with “Cesario.” Then Sebastian shows up and all bets are off. Shakespeare includes his usual characters of the fool, the foolish old man, and wise-cracking servants to make Twelfth Night a truly entertaining fast-paced romantic comedy with several interwoven plots of romance, mistaken identities, lust for ambition, and practical jokes.
